A Message From Joel
I love working with great engineers. Especially those that are willing to forget for a little while what "can" be done. That characteristic was a requirement at Red Sky Interactive, the company I co-founded in 1993 (with partner Tim Smith) and served for the following 9 years as Chief Creative Officer. Each of the interactive ads to the left was the result of great interactions between the creative and technical sides of the company. Each won numerous awards, and challenged the technology and, more importantly, the interactive conventions of their time. The Interactive principles that my work was based on then, is still far from fully realized, as evidenced by my ongoing ability to choke any processor.
Look, I want to put a Theme Park in everyone's home. Figuratively speaking. And this keeps me fitfully unsatisfied with any current technical state to date.
As you will see, I later opportunistically transitioned into the development of product companies (as opposed to service). Modstream, and Harmony DMC are both fully functional companies now (I maintain a shareholder position in each) and throughout the development process I was reminded that interactive advertising is akin to being such an entrepreneur. We must create experiences as if they were products - not ads. That's why I have recently refocused on Interactive Marketing today. The coming innovations will require such entrepreneurialism.
Some of the ads to your left are over a decade old, and yet (ancient technical considerations such as color/bit depth, aside) they are still surprisingly relevant with regard to our enlightened "Web 2.0" understanding of the medium. As you review these samples, notice that by-in-large each piece provides some level of independent value, in addition to a marketing message. This continues to be a key component in all my work, and in my opinion, one of the most basic principles of interactive communication. Today this position may seem self-evident (I hope it is), but at the time that these were conceived, Red Sky was looked on by the advertising industry as something like a fringe radical.
I’m posting this small sample of work by request, and sincerely hope against likelihood, that it will still run on whatever "futuristic" system you’re using today. Apologies if not.
...and incidentally, welcome to the "Digital Dark Ages".
